Hi guys,

I've got a question about image requests. I've received one this morning, asking for a full size version for own use. Now i know it's a very common thing to say that it is for own use, but in more then one ocasion, it turns out be anything but "for own use".

Question now is, how to cope with requests like this? any feedback is welcome...

Cheers!

Menno

'Own personal use' I tend not to give the file but offer to give them a print (at a price of course). Tell them that digital files are not available for personal use but prints are. Or set a price for the digital file that will put it out of their price range and they have to opt for the print.

Hi Michael...

First of all, thanks for the feedback. I intend to do the same. What do you mean with print? what is the difference between a print and the digital file its self?

A print is a physical copy printed on to photographic paper that you would then have to mail to the person. A digital file would be the jpeg that would be emailed.

Ah, okay, then i understand. In holland that's called by a different name, that's why i was confused. Anyhow, for him it's to do about the full size digital file. I will dive into AP's pricing list to see what's reasonable....

Thanks!

It depends on what the image is used for. I get requests from pilots of the aircraft featured in my photos and I will supply a JPEG free of charge. The way I see it, without these guys I would not have pictures!

Besides it can lead to opportunities and friendships.

It's your call, sometimes I have to admit that I ignore some requests as some companies just want something for nothing.

Hi Wallace...

In that case i sure would be doing the same as you by giving it free of charge. That can certainly lead to opportunities. This guy told me he wants it for his private collection.....guess he´s not a, or the pilot of the concerning plane, cause he probably would have told me that. And it´s like you said, to much companies are trying to get something for free nowadays, so we have to be a little bit carefull on that....

Thanks for the feedack though

cheers...

Hi, I have the same "problem". This morning got a mail from a person named Sandro Vicente.

He said that he wants to use this image here: http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/182482/n932fr-frontier-airlines-airbus-a319/ for a Powerpoint presentation about Aviation for his class. According to his email and the description he is teacher/profesor at Bridgewater State University.

The original email is:

"Name: Sandro Vicente

Organisation: Bridgewater State University

Hello Sir

I was wondering if I could you your picture on a aviation related Powerpoint for a class. Thanks for your consideration

Sandro

Requested image: http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/182482/n932fr-frontier-airlines-airbus-a319/"

Should I give him the picture or not? What do you advise me?

I would refer to this page

http://www.airplane-pictures.net/licensing-guide.php

Send him the price quoted on it for a powerpoint presentation. If he accepts then I would get payment and then send him a low res version (1200 - 1600px).

When I get requests for images, I always price them depending on what quality is requested and as per the use intended.

If it's for a personal collection and I suspect it won't be reproduced, a simple 1024x768 @ 72ppi JPG is what I'll send to them.

Hello guys!!!!

I also join me in this post, because i too have been asked to send my original image.

The person who has requested me, wants the photo in original format up to 2MB.

What should i do? I must obtain a sales price for my photos?

I consulted the section on prices, but i would like your own advice.

Thanks to all!

Giovanni

Good morning Giovanni,

is it a guy named Dan who wants a picture of a 777?

If so, he asks a lot of people, also on other websites. Everytime I sad no, he asks why and I explained him that I don't give my pictures to other people I don't know. He doesn't stop to ask and so I told him that I want money for the picture. After this mail I didn't received a request anymore from him.

Cheers :)

Exactly, it's him!!!!

So would the photos of others for his personal use, for free.

It doesn't seem at all correct.

Thanks for the reply!

Dan is thought to be using 2mb+ images that he has conned from photographers to produce posters that he then sells. I have no proof of that but I'm hearing it from more and more people.

Anyone asking for 2mb+ images is almost certainly going to be printing them at 16"x12" as a minimum size.....and that screams "posters for sale" to me !

Sandro Vicente asked to use my night shot image of an RAF A109 at Northolt.......

Image

as well for his powerpoint presentation. He seems to be genuine as he supplied me with details of his University course which seems to check out OK. I supplied him with a 1600 pixel image at around 800kb size which won't be of much use if printed at any size bigger than A4. He seemed happy with that and promised to give a photographer credit.
