Hi,
First of all, I admire all the beautiful photo's in the EC department. But lately I began to doubt why some photo's are chosen as an Eye catcher, which states "A selection of photos made by senior admins on AP".
For example this one
http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/408351/zs-cdm-private-cirrus-sr22/
Proper lighting on the whole airplane itself, and just with a nice panning movement. Nothing extraordinary in my opinion.
And this one
http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/307798/n366aa-american-airlines-boeing-767-300er/
Good action shot and pinsharp, but overal not eyecatching in my opinion.
http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/393933/d-esxa-private-xtremeair-xa41-sbach-300/
A static shot with nice clouds, that's all in my opinion. I surely do NOT want to offend all the photographers who made these shots, just my vision about choosing EC's!
Best regards,
Max Niessen

That 's why it is the editors choice :-)
Max, it all remains personal taste and you can endless discuss this, but that is how it is. The one's you selected I do not agree with apart from the Extreme, that one I agree with you. When I look at other choices, yes I sometimes would also have chosen another picture, but to make it a topic in a forum....no. By the way, I really admire your work, especially the gliders! |

Hi Gerard,
Thanks for your comment. And yes, I do agree with your statement.

There is a post similar to this in the FM section of the site and Angelo summed the selection of ECs up nicely. I don't think he'll mind me reposting it here. Note that I've removed some lines from it as they referred to other posts in the thread.
Quote Angelo:
Eye Catchers.
Two people pick 'em. I am one of them. I picked the two in question and I need not provide my reasoning. They are worthy as Eye Catchers in their own unique ways. My methodology for the eye catcher isn't far from what was suggested in a post from a previous administrator but isn't limited to that either.
A few things to consider. While I do peruse the site other than the last 7 days uploads, I can't possibly see EVERY picture that was ever posted or screened. If you see something that jumps at you, make a forum post and bring it to our attention. As a screening team we make note of shots that are possible EC candidates but even then we may miss something.
The description given above of what an EC is is flawed. The definition on the site says "Eyecatchers is a selection of photos by Senior AP Editors." It's that simple.
Now for my disclaimer, and I mean this....I have great respect for the photographers that contribute to the site. I am a photographer firstly and understand that what "floats my boat" might not float yours. That's why I can look a perfectly edited GA shot and see perfection just like I can a night time cockpit shot of the Aurora. But remember, just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean the rest of the world agrees.
Isac to be perfectly blunt your post is more a 'poor old me' post than anything constructive. There have been shots far superior to yours, and I'm sure will be in the future, that will never get EC status for exactly the reasons Angelo gave above. |

Thanks Michael......Max, in American Baseball you can be an All Star for many different reasons. You could win a Gold Glove for defense, bat .400 and never hit a home run, or lead the league in stolen bases but have a low batting average. My point is you can get an eye catcher from me for "pin point" perfect editing, lovely composition, an emotive or unique shot, or any other multitude of reasons without prejudice or limitation.
I do not play the popularity game only selecting "most viewed", and I honestly RARELY look at who shot the photo. Isac, I am not avoiding you or anybody else. For me if it "catches my eye".......it gets consideration. It's pretty simple but in the end, it's not designed to be picked so "everybody" likes it. We are all different with different styles and likes.
