I don't want to sound too cynical but isn't it a bit cheeky using a forum like this to gain Facebook likes?

Sorry, but i have to agree with Paul......This forum is to discuss aviation photography related matters. Not really the place to gain members or likes for facebook or something else, is my personal opinion.....

However when you look at the top of this page you will see the FB button .... what is the use for that ???

I have no idea, but this seems a bit misplaced if you ask me. This is not what a forum is meant for...

Robby, the Facebook button at the top allows you to 'like' the Airplane-Pictures page, which helps promote the site rather than an individual member.

I honestly don't want to sound hyper-cynical, I just don't think it's entirely appropriate to use this forum in this way. Promoting yourself like this kinda feels a bit like it's being rammed down our throats which isn't actually all that comfortable. :/

Unfortunately I have to conclude that the designer / owner of this site has put it there for a reason.

I do not think it was misplaced or that it got there by mistake.

Robby, I think perhaps there's some confusion as to the purpose of the Facebook icon on the site. I don't want to be presumptuous but perhaps if Menno knew its actual purpose he may change his view on whether it's misplaced or not?

Thanks for your observation Paul. The FB part however works both ways ... that is the social and a-social part of it. But I would think that the designer / owner of the site is aware of that.

Naturally the owner is aware of that but I think we're talking about two quite different aspects of using Facebook. A-P obviously wants to promote itself as much as possible and building elements of social networking sites into the system helps achieve that, but that's quite different to what we see in this thread. Here we have an individual member using this site to promote his own work outside the site, so Airplane-Pictures is in effect being used as a promotional tool from which it sees no benefit.

As a site owner myself I think a certain amount of respect should exist in how you use websites, and I can't quite agree that using a site like A-P to promote yourself personally is entirely appropriate or fair on that site.

Guys, i'm just giving my personal opinion....put aside that there might actually be a purpose for putiing this stuff on a forum like this. I think that a forum like this here on AP should only be used for questions, discussions about aviation photography related matters......and not for promoting likes on face book, become a member or something else close to that.....would be a hell of a mess if we all do that, crickey!

Menno, exactly. That's another thing, if one person starts promoting themselves like this and others follow suit then it will get very, very messy very, very quickly. Surely the point of the forum is to try keep people on the site (or give them a reason to be here) rather than direct them away from it?
