Tripod for Night Photography

Hello,

I am looking to buy a sturdy tripod ideal for night photography. The current one I have was never the best and somewhat wobbly to begin with, but was the best I had at the moment, and now the leg is busting at one of the joints. With winter season just around the corner, and epic de-icing long exposures, I'm looking for a lightweight and sturdy tripod to do just that, and convenient enough to take travelling with me.

Looking to spend around $100-150 CAD

Thanks and I look forward to your replies

I'd recommend Vanguard tripods and use ball head. Among all tripods I own this Vanguard model is perfect choice for me for photography (was around 200$) - real pro stuff, sturdy and lightweight, comes with nice practical bag. Stretch your budget some more if possible and get the right stuff.

Hi Martin,

it depends on which lens you want to use on your tripod. If you want to use your Sigma 150-600 for example, I think 150-200$ is not enough (if you want to get satisfying results at long expos). My personal tip is: Have a look at the products of Feisol (pretty fameless and producing in Taiwan) I bought mine 2 years ago and it is AWESOME. Very solid, even at faster wind speeds, holding my 300mm + 2x Konverter safely :-)

Oliver is right! I forgot to mention heavy lens issues if the tripod isn't sturdy enough especially head. Head is the key element! My Vanguard with ball head is satisfactory with 16-35 or 24-105 mm but when I'm taking photos with long leses I use pro video tripod with pro video head that holds 20 kg, no shaking at all.

My tripod is a Vanguard Alta Pro 264AB 100 and supports weighing up to 7 kg, still have not really tested my Canon EOS 7D + Grip + Sigma 50-500 OS, but I think it's a good option, the Vanguard Pro models are awarded TIPA 2009 awards
