The Rotax engine powers lots of aircraft these days including this one 912ULS engined gyroplane. Note the belt drive off the main hub driving the horizontal shaft above the engine, which turns the shaft with the gaiter, which ultimately turns the rotors. The rotor must be spun up to speed for the aircraft to get enough lift for take-off. This is what separates helicopters from gyrocopters, helicopters can take off vertically.
