Photographer's remark

As i sat out side Heathrow opposite to the Heathrow Academy whilst the aircraft where landing on 27R. I noticed that there were alot of fire engines with their sirens on driving past. A minute later the fire engines were seen by the side of the runway and i thought it was strange. About 1 minute later i heard the piolt of an A340-300 Cathay Pacific saying that they had landing gear problems and the door would not shut on the rear landing gear. About 10 minutes later i saw it on its approach banking and i had noticed the middle landing gear was not out and also the gear doors weren't shut. The pilot had to do a smooth landing to ensure that the doors would not hit the ground. As he came in there was a bit of wobble and he touched down. It was one of the best greasy landing i had ever seen in my life. He then slowed down and finished off at the other end of the runway.

The piolt emailed me requesting to have a copy for a newsletter and this is what it
included
"Hi Jack, First of all let me congratulate you on the excellent photograph. I
was the Captain of that flight - we had lost a hydraulic system on our way from Hong Kong,
and it meant that the undercarriage had to be lowered by a backup system which results in
the gear doors hanging down as you can see. We also have thrust reversers only on the
inboard engines and also use a secondary braking system, but as you saw the aircraft stops
without any problems. The only reason we have to be towed in is that using the backup gear
system means we have no nosewheel steering. Anyway my company would love to use your photo
in an internal publication, so I was wondering if you could let me have a copy, please?
Any use would of course be credited to you, but if you're unhappy about releasing a copy
then don't worry. If you have any questions or would like to know more then please email
me. In the meantime, thanks very much for your time and best wishes, John Megarry, Airbus
Captain"
