On the 11th July 2009, I went to Heathrow to do some plane spotting. It got to about 16:00 and by now I had worked my round to the 'Heathrow Academy'. I was sitting across the road from it taken some shots where I could here sirens coming from the foreground. Several Fire Engines came out with their sirens on racing up the taxiway. They then split into three groups of two and one pair stopped at the first turn off, the second at the second one, and the other pair right at the end of the runway. Having just watched the TV series 'Airport' (which is set in LHR) I thought it was just one of their drills. About quarter of an hour passed and no sign of an emergency landing, but the fire engines were still there. But then, as I looked into the flight path for runway 27R, I could see what seemed to be an Airbus A340-300 Cathay Pacific 'One World' livery coming in on approach. However, it only had three sets of landing gear out as the middle set (underneath the fuselage) had failed and all the landing gear doors were down. The pilot did an exceptional job of landing the aircraft as he had to make sure he wouldn't scrape the doors. When the aircraft reverse thrust, I also noticed that only the two inside engines were working, but it managed to stop safely at the last turn off for the taxiway. Due to an electrical problem, the aircraft had to be towed in as it prevented the aircraft from being able to steer the nose wheel.
