How does five photos per day work?

How does the five photos per day limit work?

I uploaded five pictures yesterday evening (Monday). Today (Tuesday afternoon) the upload page says I have used my limit of five photos, and tells me to try again tomorrow.

So is the limit based on a calendar day (in which case the upload page is incorrect because clearly today is a different day to yesterday!), or 24 hours from when the previous five were uploaded, or something else...?

While your photos are in the queue, if you click on the 'Discussion with Editor' link under the photo, you can see the exact time your photo was uploaded which can be quite helpful.
