When you upload a picture there is a field about news photos, up top on the upload page. You can click it - if you do that, your photo will be screened as a news photo, and if it passes the news screening it's then published by AP admins.

as Kuba wrote, on the upload page there is special news field to tick (just under auto-fill box). Use it to upload your photo as a news. But please, remember that sometimes photos marked as a "news" don't meet our news requirements. Read our news guidance to make sure that it's okay. And don't forget to tell us why your photo is newsworthy - use a "message to editor" box. Only if these two conditions are met, your photo will be given a screening priority.
