"Mariah" just arrived and is being put together for the fire season in British Columbia. She became tanker 745 for the summer. Some interesting history on this machine. She started life as a US Army S-54. When she retired she was upgraded to the civilian standard S-64E configuration. She has a maximum lift of 20,000 lbs at sea level with low fuel loads. You can see the 6" APU jet engine and exhaust to the left of the rotor mast facing the camera. This APU fires up about 10 minutes before they leave. It is quite loud. The the hydraulics cycle the rotor blades angle quite significantly. Then one engine starts and the rotor brake is released. The second engine is started and she powers up and gets to work. The majority of the center body of these helicopters is made up of 3 huge fuel tanks holding about 5,000 liters of jet fuel. Their maximum takeoff weight including their external load is 42,000 lbs. There are roughly 30 Skycranes still flying in the world.
