This colourful OC-10 Bronco is armed with pods of smoke rockets to designate targets for other aircraft to attack. These aircraft were flown as forward air control aircraft where they would communicate with ground forces to determine where help was needed and then would control the flow of aircraft and ordnance onto the designated targets. They were very helpful in SAR missions where they could work to locate downed crew members, locate the flak guns and ground forces hunting them. Basically they were flying control towers in combat.
