Ascent Helicopters brought this Bell 212 to fight the raging wildfires in the area. If you compare this tail to most other 212 tails you would notice that they have done a significant modification to the profile of the tail removing significant tail width and area. Strengthening of the tail and modifications to the tail boom and tail (2 strips running along the top and lower sides of the boom) result in what is commonly called a "fast fin modification" and "strake kit". This allows more tail rotor authority due to the greater air flow around the tail and vastly improved air flow around the tail boom. The machine uses less power to hover and while lifting allowing for greater performance and increased safety margins. Hot and high lifting ability can increase up to 1250 lbs in thin air. Helicopters are effected less by tail winds as well. Breathing new life into old hard working machines. NASA Aerodynamiscist Henry Kelly says FastFin "is – without a doubt – the single-most important aerodynamic performance modification in the history of helicopters.”
