I did not know what an APU is so looked on the net.APU means auxiliary power unit. It is located on tailend of commercial aircrafts. It is
actually a small jet engine. It consist of small turbine which powers the electrical
systems of aircraft such as air conditioning, cockpit computers and electrical devices.
Main application of APU is to start the main engines by providing initial power. APU is
started by batteries or by using ground power source .It consumes around 50 gallons of
fuel per hour in aircrafts such as A320 and Boieng 737.
