Author's remark: This cool old UH-34D Seahorse still looks good for her age. Pilots entered the cockpit by climbing up the outside the helicopter. These machines were the last piston powered helicopters in the Marine Corps being powered by a single 1,525 HP Wright R-1820-84 radial engine. They were replaced in service by the turbine powered UH-1 Huey and twin Huey. These choppers had room for up to 18 marines or 8 stretchers in the D models. They had an empty weight of 7,900 lb (3,583 kg) and a maximum takeoff weight of 14,000 lb (6,350 kg). Roughly 2,100 of these helicopters were built.
