These C-1A Traders were the first COD or carrier on-board delivery aircraft for the Navy. They were the workhorses in the 1960-1970's. Their payload was 9 passengers or 3500lbs of cargo. Approximately 87 were built. Being the only avgas powered aircraft in the Navy they had to carry all their fuel with them as they could not refuel on-board ship. They were eventually replaced by the turbine powered C-2 Greyhound. PRIFLI or primary flight control can be seen above on the ships island. This is the carriers air traffic control tower for all launch and landing activities.
