Two Libyan Air Force Mirage jet fighters unexpectedly flew to Malta this afternoon with their pilots claiming they escaped to Malta after having been ordered to bomb protesters who have taken control of the second city of Benghazi.
The pilots told the Maltese authorities that they left from a base near Tripoli. They are being questioned by the police.
The pilots initially asked for emergency clearance to land and for refueling.

Good job you were on the scene to capture these rare machines, Ray! Not something you see
every day.

Great shot. Can someone tell me, wheater these are bombs or not under the wing. Looks like
some kind of fuel bomb. Can anyone confirm or clarify, what these pods are?
When
did the Lybians get F1's? Thought they are flying MiG-23 and 27s.

Looks like Matra Type 155 launcher with 18× SNEB 68mm unguided rockets under wings.
Superb catch!!!

Yes indeed
Google search lead me to a wikipedia pic (sorry not possible to show the
link) where you can see without cap.
But can they remove the caps in flight in
order to fire?
