On June 20, 1540, João de Almeida Torto, nurse at the Hospital de Santo Antonio de Viseu, master barber with a bleeding license, astrologer and first letter teacher, made one of the first documented flight attempts in Portugal. Equipped with "triple-soled shoes with space to mitigate the fall" and "a bird's-head cap with a huge open beak". He jumped at 5 AM from one of the towers Viseu Cathedral with wings made of "Strong and double cloth" Maneuvered by his arms and having planned to make a short flight from the tower of the Cathedral to Campo de São Mateus.
