This retired RCAF CH-113A Labrador SAR helicopter was recently added to the CFB Comox Air Force memorial park. The Canadian Air Force acquired 18 of these machines. They were upgraded from the basic CH-46A Sea Knight flown by the US Marines and US Navy by adding super long range fuel tanks, a search radar in the nose, a high speed rescue hoist and a watertight hull for marine landings. A significant amount of rescue gear was carried including water pumps for sinking vessels, medical kits, life rafts etc. The range was over 1,100 km in this configuration. When they were retired quite a few were purchased by Columbia Helicopters of the USA for heli logging and heavy lift work either as active or spares machines.
