If the faded 761 side number is correct, my log book suggests I last flew this Gannet on
July 5th 1968. What's being done with her? She looks in need of a good dose of
TLC.
I flew with 849 Squadron (the Royal Navy's Airborne early Warning Squadron)
from '64 to '68 and enjoyed the AEW3, AS4 and T5 Gannets. Ugly as sin, pleasant to
fly and a joy to deck-land.
Photographer's remark is not entirely correct. This
was NOT an experimental aircraft, there were 44 in frontline service in the 60's and
70's and it was principally an AEW aircraft (ie: a small shipborne AWACS). The earlier
AS4 was the Anti-sub aircraft and is nicely illustrated in Wikipedia.
Anyway, nice
to see her, hope to see other comments by others who knew the aircraft.
