The turbine blades in some jet engines are started by blowing compressed air from a ground
unit through the engines. Some military engines such as this Avon had quick starting
Hoffman cartridge starters.
What is a very large shot gun cartridge (without the
lead shot) is detonated and the resultant force is enough to turn the engine over, get the
blades turning, to compress and ignite the fuel air mixture. Once the mixture is ignited
the engine is self sustaining.
