Please allow me to put additional words here on this special event.
The RJOO ban on heavy aircraft actually took effect some 8 years ago. Ever since then, no commercial airliners had flown any 747 into Itami (except for special maintenance or emergency situation). As JAL had retired its 747s a while ago, and ANA following the same to retire its 747s by end of March 2014.
With ANA's 747 fleet retirement decision, there has been a move in and out of the company to realize "return visit of ANA 747 to Itami" commemorate glorious days of Itami.
Now, on January 12, ANA managed to make it happen - one special 747 flight to Itami.
The flight was a unique arrangement probably to go along with the regulations. JA8961 was ferried from Haneda in the morning with no passenger, landed at RJOO at 7:20am. Held several ceremonial events there. In the afternoon, 747 took off for a short "special cruising flight" with passenger chosen from residents around Itami Airport. After an hours flight, the flight landed RJOO again, another series of events, and finally made its last take off to its base (Haneda RJTT) in the evening with no passengers.
It is easy to imagine the vast and difficult efforts among ANA, the Aviation authorities, city governments around the airport and residents in the cities to make this special event to happen. For ANA, there were no direct revenue for this event (the cruise flight was invitation and free of charge.)
Many of our colleague A-P photographers were out there to witness this historic event. One of the report says there were at lease fifteen thousands of fans visited the airport.
It was really a great event with so many people celebrating the last come back of 747 to Itami.
Many thanks to those who made this great event happen.
We miss 747 in Itami.
Regards
