The glider tow winch. One of two cables are used to winch the glider into the air. Each cable drum is selected by manually engaging a clutch mechanism and the order is given to start pulling on the north or south cable. The winch operator is protected by a robust cage, if the winch line was to break it could easily do serious damage to anyone in the vicinity of the winch.
