I remember this plane. Used to fly to the Isle of Barra and land on the beach. Also used
to act as the Air Ambulance for the islands. The stretcher was always located at the rear
of the aircraft on the right hand side facing the front. Patients were given a tot of
whisky to help settle them for the flight despite thier protestations at times by the
aircraft nurses. BEA had two of these aircraft an one got stuck in the sand at Barra. The
fire engine attended in order to recover the aircraft from the sinking sand only to fall
foul itself. Local shell factory came to rescue with sheets of corrugated iron and
tractors to recover the aircraft, succesfully. The fire engine got a salute as it sank
beneath the waves. Was recovered the following day and under went extensive repair and
cleaning. Ahh the memories, great aircraft an fond memories.
