A Sequoia Helicopters 212 lands with a 100 ft long line bucket for refueling directly on the sloping runway at 100 Mile House, British Columbia. Note the fuel hose on the ground. A very large 60,000 liter capacity transport truck carrying jet fuel was parked alongside the runway allowing the helicopters to land and refuel with the engines running. This hot refueling is approved for wildfire fighting as it is an urgent situation and time is limited. This way they could refuel all 16 helicopters working this fire with little slowdown in their fire attack. In British Columbia, most helicopters use a 100 ft long line with a large Bambi bucket to fight fire due to the heavy forest cover and hard to reach ponds and lakes. They can lower the bucket into these hard to reach spaces and fill it with water without putting the helicopter rotor at risk of contacting trees or obstructions. Some helicopters have large belly tanks mounted and use a snorkel hose to fill the tank while they hover over ponds, creeks, rivers or any water source with room to approach and at least 1 foot of water depth. If there is nothing near the fire ground crews will fill large pools from tanker trucks. The helicopters will fill from these pools while in the hover.
