In 1969, Rolls Royce/MAN-Turbo won the tender to power the future PANAVIA Tornado multi-purpose twin-engine combat aircraft. Rolls-Royce took over 42.5% of the development and subsequent production of the engines, MTU 42.5% and Fiat 15%. The engine consists of 17 modules, each of which is interchangeable. If one engine fails, the second engine takes over the entire supply of the aircraft by automatically shutting down the power. The most striking features are its three-shaft design and thrust reverser. It is the first military engine that is electronically controlled. The first run of the RB 199 engine -34 R took place in September 1971. The first use in the Tornado took place on August 14, 1974 in Manching. At the end of 1978, the first series engines were delivered in the basic version of the RB 199 Mk 101.
