There are certain places you travel to that you get attached to for some reason - whatever that reason may be, and in all the places I've been to Madeira is probably the one I feel the greatest connection to. Today I finalised a trip back there in November with three fellow photographer friends so I'm sitting here going back through photos from past trips, and this jumped out at me. The island recently suffered a mudslide as a result of unusually heavy rain that wiped 42 innocent people from the face of our little blue planet; they were either people who lived in this usually peaceful place or were there on holiday enjoying its gentle tranquility when this sad event happened. Since my first trip there in 2007 I've always considered Madeira to be a very calm place so this violent tragedy just doesn't make any sense to me, and even observing via the news from a distance the idea something like this can happen in such a peaceful place has taken a lot of getting my head round. In a way this image is quite appropriate for these thoughts; the sea is rough, it's violent, it's battering the coast relentlessly, and yet through all this the true beauty of it all still shines through. May those who lost their lives in February 2010 rest in peace.
