If the faded 761 side number is correct, my log book suggests I last flew this Gannet on
July 5th 1968. What\'s being done with her? She looks in need of a good dose of
TLC.
I flew with 849 Squadron (the Royal Navy\'s Airborne early Warning Squadron)
from \'64 to \'68 and enjoyed the AEW3, AS4 and T5 Gannets. Ugly as sin, pleasant to
fly and a joy to deck-land.
Photographer\'s remark is not entirely correct. This
was NOT an experimental aircraft, there were 44 in frontline service in the 60\'s and
70\'s and it was principally an AEW aircraft (ie: a small shipborne AWACS). The earlier
AS4 was the Anti-sub aircraft and is nicely illustrated in Wikipedia.
Anyway, nice
to see her, hope to see other comments by others who knew the aircraft.

I have to advise that this one and the Chipmonk were taken on a 4Mpx Nikon camera and a
lens with a teleconverter! The Nikon D2Hs is my poor weather camera because of its high
iso performance.

I suppose it was the 300mm one. What was the converter - 1.4 or 1.7?

Yep! 300mm and 1.4X TC yielding 420mm at f4.0

Thanks Stephen. The quality is just amazing.

Have you used a sparkle filter on this, David?

No Stephen, it is taken through our room window of the Renaissance Hotel, which sort of
gives the same effect.

Brilliant interpretation, Wallace. Looks like it was taken in 1930 when this aircraft was
"born".

Nice shot wallace! Just came upon your site while brousing. Looks a bit like a shot my
father took in the 60\'s while the plane was at Tarrant Rushton.
We had just
refuelled at Perth and were on the way to Kirkwall to celeberate the 75th anniversay of
Highland Airways being formed by Capt EE Fresson. As you say the chap iss walking the wing
because the aircraft is basically out of control down wind. It has no brakes and unlike
the Tiger it has a fixed tailskid. Handles a bit like a Tesco shopping trolley! We made it
up to the Orkneys OK amidst some fantastic weather and received quite a reception as this
is an original Highland Airways aircraft!
